Abstract

This research discusses the meaning of the symbol sengkalan relief sukuh temple located in Ngargoyoso, Karanganyar, Central Java. The research focuses on the problem of the interpretation of the meaning of sukuh temple relief symbols in a cultural perspective through Clifford Geertz’s hermeneutic theory, that the symbol is a special sign that is arbritrer or not the same as the one marked and can only be understood in the context interpreted by the culture itself, or is culturally specific. Furthermore, this research reviews the meaning of the presence and visualization of the relief of Sukuh temple which is considered the last relic of Majapahit kingdom. So the purpose of the research is more to explore the presence and meaning of relief sengkalan in Sukuh temple as part of the sign system in Javanese culture. At the same time as an effort to preserve the value of tradition about pralambang in the form of sengkalan that is often used by Javanese people in temple relief, in this context is sukuh temple so that it can be understood by Javanese people now as a way of understanding themselves, life and life as part of the ‘Eastern’ culture. The making of sukuh temple relief sting is possible to uncover events or events at the end of majapahit’s heyday, which may have escaped the historical track record of majapahit kingdom that has been understood. Let the temples speak, so they are not merely banners that lead us to myth and mysticism, but there is a lot of wisdom that they will whisper from the hidden meaning behind the relief of Sukuh temple. Keywords: Meaning, Relief, Sengkalan, Sukuh Temple.
