Kala Citra: The Indonesian Journal of Photography and Visual Studies welcomes submissions of original research articles, review articles (critical reviews), and book reviews. Authors are required to adhere to the following guidelines to ensure the quality and integrity of their submissions:
Original Articles/Research:
The word count is 4.000–8.000 words, including references. The paper must present original research findings, theoretical frameworks, or innovative practices in the fields of photography and visual studies.
Review Articles:
The word count is 4.000–8.000 words, including references. The analysis must be comprehensive, covering existing literature, trends, and developments in photography and visual studies.
Book Reviews:
The word count for this book review is 900–2.000 words. The review must critically evaluate recently published books relevant to photography, visual studies, or related fields.
Manuscripts must be written in either Indonesian or English. The language must be clear, concise, and free of grammatical errors.
All submissions must be free from plagiarism and self-plagiarism. Manuscripts will be screened using plagiarism detection software (e.g., Turnitin). Manuscripts with a similarity index of more than 20% will be returned for revision. If the pre-review revision reaches 3 times the minimum limit, it will be rejected. Authors must comply with the journal's ethical guidelines and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) standards.
Manuscripts that are improvements of previously presented seminar papers must include a statement confirming that:
The work was previously presented at a seminar/conference.
A draft of the manuscript was published in the seminar/conference proceedings.
All authors must meet the journal's criteria for authorship and co-authorship as outlined in the ethical guidelines. Each author must have made a significant contribution to the research and writing process.
Authors may include an acknowledgments section to thank sponsors, funders, supporters, or individuals who contributed to the research but do not qualify as authors.
Authors who violate ethical guidelines, including plagiarism or self-plagiarism, will be blacklisted from submitting to the journal in the future. Authors are responsible for the content of their submissions and must address any ethical concerns raised during the review process.
Manuscripts must be submitted through the journal’s online submission system.
Ensure that all required files (manuscript, figures, tables, etc.) are uploaded correctly.
Follow the journal’s template and formatting guidelines (Indonesian or English) for submission.
By adhering to these guidelines, authors contribute to the integrity and quality of Kala Citra: The Indonesian Journal of Photography and Visual Studies. The journal reserves the right to reject submissions that do not meet these standards.
Guidelines for the Preparation of Articles
Authors submitting to Kala Citra: The Indonesian Journal of Photography and Visual Studies must adhere to the following guidelines to ensure their manuscripts meet the journal’s standards:
It is imperative that authors utilize the official journal template (Article Template in Indonesian, Article Template in English, or Book Review) for manuscript preparation. These templates can be obtained from the journal's website. Failure to employ the template will result in the manuscript being returned for correction.
The title must be clear and concise, with a maximum of 15 words. It must accurately reflect the content and focus of the article.
A maximum of 5 authors is allowed per manuscript.
If there are 7 authors, a statement explaining the division of tasks and a strong justification must be provided.
Manuscripts with more than 7 authors will be rejected.
Authors must clearly state their affiliations (institution, department, and email address) and adhere to the Co-Authorship Ethics guidelines.
The abstract should be 150–250 words in length and written in both Indonesian and English. In addition, 3–5 keywords must be included to reflect the main themes of the article.
The introduction must include:
A literature review of at least 5-10 recent journal articles (from the last 5-10 years), with a preference for international journal articles.
A clear explanation of the research gap, novelty of the research, and conceptual framework.
The research objectives and main research questions.
The method section must be written clearly and in detail, allowing for replication of the study. Include information on research design, data collection, and analysis methods.
Present the findings clearly and systematically. Use tables, figures, or other visual aids as needed. Analyze the results, relate them to the literature review, and address the research questions in the discussion.
The conclusion should not be a summary; it must answer the research questions posed in the introduction. Include recommendations for future research or practical applications.
Authors may include an acknowledgments section to thank sponsors, funders, or individuals who contributed to the research but do not qualify as authors.
References must meet the following criteria:
80% of references should be from sources published within the last 5–10 years. Primary sources, such as archives, historical documents, newspapers, and older contemporaneous sources are an exception.
A maximum of 40% of references can be from books.
At least 10% of references must be from international journals.
Use the journal’s preferred citation style APA 7th edition consistently throughout the manuscript.
Authors must ensure their manuscripts are free from plagiarism and self-plagiarism.
Manuscripts must comply with the journal’s ethical guidelines and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) standards.
Before submitting, ensure the manuscript includes:
A clear and concise title.
Author information and affiliations.
Abstracts in Indonesian and English with keywords.
A well-structured introduction, method, results, discussion, and conclusion.
Properly formatted references.
A statement of compliance with ethical guidelines (if applicable).
