Kendangan pinatut adalah aktivitas yang harus dilakukan pengendang untuk menghidupkan sajian gending pada sajian pertunjukan karawitan mandiri gaya Surakarta atau lazim disebut klenengan. Untuk alasan tersebut maka diperlukan sebuah penelitian untuk mengeksplanasi kendangan pinatut dengan cara mentransfer konsep musikal karawitan yang masih berada dalam ruang oral menjadi kajian ilmiah - keilmuan karawitan - menurut sudut pandang para praktisi karawitan. Maka pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah fenomenologi Alfred Schut. Schutz memandang manusia sebagai “self elucidation†atau “penjelasan atau uraian diri†yang dalam pelaksanaan penelitian lebih banyak menggali: apa yang mereka katakan, apa yang mereka pikirkan, apa yang mereka tafsirkan tentang dunia mereka(Walsh dan Wals, 1967). Pendekatan lain yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah emic fenomenologi. Apa yang ingin dilukiskan dari suatu kebudayaan harus atau sebaiknya ditentukan secara emic, yakni mengikuti pandangan pemilik kebudayaannya (Ahimsa dalam Waridi, 2005: 34). Selain mencari data berdasarkan pustaka, penelitian ini menitik beratkan pada metode wawancara secara mendalam dari para praktisi karawitan kemudian dikomparasikan dengan data-data audio rekaman klenengan dan peristiwa klenengan secara langsung. Kendangan pinatut merupakan kendangan yang disajikan tanpa mengikuti konvensi serta sistematika kendangan yang telah disepakati oleh para pelaku karawitan. Kendangan pinatut disajikan berdasarkan faktor-faktor pembentuknya/ pemicunya, sehingga menghasilkan kesan rasa yang sesuai dan pantas. Kendangan pinatut hadir karena ada faktor pembentuknya yaitu lagu, berikut variasinya yaitu kalimat lagu, ritme, cakepan dan garap balungan.

Pinatut is an activity that has to be carried out by pengendang (the kendang player) to turn on the traditional gending in the Surakarta style of independent musical performances or commonly called klenengan. This study explains the pinatut kendangan by transferring karawitan concepts that are still in the oral space into scientific studies - karawitan science - according to the karawitan practitioners’ point of view. The approach used in this research is the phenomenology of Alfred Schut. Schutz views humans as “self-elucidation†or “explanation or self-description†which in the research explores more about: what they say, what they think, what they interpret about their world (Walsh and Wals, 1967). Another approach used in this study is emic phenomenology. What you want to describe from a culture must or should be determined emotionally. It is supposed to follow the owner’s view of the culture (Ahimsa in Waridi, 2005: 34). The data is based on literature, besides, this study focuses on in-depth interview methods from karawitan practitioners then compared with audio recordings of klenengan and incidental live events. kendangan pinatut is kendangan that is presented without following the convention and systematics of kendangan agreed by the musicians. Kendangan Pinatut is presented based on their forming / triggering factors, so that it produces an appropriate sense of taste. Kendangan Pinatut emerges because of the constructing factors include the song and its variations namely the song’s sentence, rhythm, cakepan, and garap balungan.
