Puzzle-based learning media design for early childhood spice introduction to support cultural education

Abstract

This study aims to design a puzzle based educational toys to introduce Indonesian spices to early childhood learners within a contextual learning framework. Early childhood, particularly children aged 4-6 years in the intuitive thinking stage, require concrete and visually supported learning experiences. However, preliminary observations at Cihaurgeulis Early Childhood Education Center indicate that children’s knowledge of Indonesian spices remains limited. A qualitative approach was employed through observations and interviews as a preliminary study, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Based on the findings, a puzzle-based learning medium was developed using the ADDIE instructional design model. The results showed high engagement, active participation, and improve recognition of various spices through hands-on interaction with the puzzle components. The designed puzzle provides a concrete and engaging learning medium to support the introduction of Indonesian spices while aligning with children’s cognitive development characteristics.
