Abstract

Urbanization and lifestyle changes, accentuated by the Covid-19 pandemic, have exacerbated the decline in Green Spaces, leading to significant environmental degradation. This study emphasizes the urgent need for a sustainable, inclusive, and equitable approach to Covid-19 recovery, prioritizing environmental sustainability and green spaces. In response, Surakarta City has developed vertical housing projects, notably Public Housing (Rusunawa), to address the diminishing Green Space. However, challenges persist, particularly for low-income communities, necessitating innovative approaches. This study explores the potential of urban farming as an effective method to develop sustainable and affordable green urban spaces in public housing in Surakarta, Indonesia. Utilizing a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with residents of Rusunawa Surakarta and stakeholders. The findings offer practical recommendations for implementing urban farming, ensuring the creation of sustainable and affordable green spaces. The implications of this research serve as a valuable reference for government agencies, developers, and stakeholders in planning and executing effective and sustainable urban farming practices in public housing.
