Redesign of the Surakarta City Library and Archives Service Building with a Hybrid Architectural Design Idea
Main Article Content
Abstract
Surakarta citizens show strong reading enthusiasm, yet local public library facilities remain inadequate. The Surakarta City Office of Library and Archives faces layout constraints, poor circulation, and low spatial comfort. This study redesigns the library interior by applying a hybrid architectural concept, connecting literacy spaces with green transitional areas to improve user experience. The design adopts a Zen interior style for focus and quietude, alongside Batik Kawung motifs to reflect regional identity. Guided by John M. Kurtz’s design programming method—covering orientation, basic programming, program synthesis, and designing—the project incorporates continuous evaluation and user feedback. The result is a flexible, contextually rooted interior layout featuring integrated indoor and semi-outdoor reading zones, ergonomic shelf spacing, and custom furniture elements derived from traditional Javanese patterns. This redesign transforms the civic library into a comfortable, functional, and culturally meaningful public space.
